Self-identification
What it is
Self-identification is the answer to the question, “Who do I believe I am?” We may identify with the ego, the Mask Self or the Lower Self. Spiritual growth gradually shifts our identity toward the Higher Self, while teaching us to observe the rest without becoming it.
Why it matters
When the ego aligns with the Higher Self, it becomes the observer. From that place, we are no longer caught in what we observe. We discover that we are never limited to the part of ourselves currently asking for our attention.
From Bones
~1~
All told, the Lower Self should be identified, and the Higher Self, or spiritual self, should be identified with. Who makes this identification? The ego, which must become strong enough to give itself up voluntarily so that it integrates with the Higher Self. (Chapter 17)
~2~
What part of ourselves are we identifying with? For instance, it’s possible that the only thing we identify with is our ego. This is the conscious part of us that thinks and does.
If that’s the case, there’s no chance we’ll be able to bring about a change that lies outside the domain of the limited ego. (Chapter 17)
