Our journey began with the spiritual work of simply meeting ourselves. This naturally opened new possibilities of experiencing life beyond our everyday reality. Now, as our spiritual work and exploration deepen, we begin to come face-to-face with what stands in the way of reaching those possibilities.

We all have the right—and responsibility—to choose with our conscious mind how we want to experience life. Our life and spiritual work, though, bring us awareness of our hidden beliefs, emotional reactions and destructive attitudes. These discolor our life and bring grief and frustration because we can’t seem to control them.

We act, so often, at cross-purposes to ourselves.

This can be difficult to face. We may be ashamed of what we find, or convinced that certain parts of ourselves make us unworthy of love. We may even be ashamed of our best self—of the love, goodness and greatness that live within us.

We may try to hide from ourselves and others. We may try to push these parts of ourselves as far away as we can. But it’s not possible to make these parts of us disappear. And it’s not necessary.

Our distortions can become entangled in every part of our lives: our life force, pleasure, relationships and sense of fairness and justice. What shows up in our lives isn’t a series of isolated events. It’s a reflection of the tangle that lives inside us.

Rather than condemn these parts of ourselves or pretend they aren’t there, the work is to be willing to see them. To understand, accept and take responsibility for them. Slowly, gently, with firmness and much compassion.

What blocks our light is not separate from us. It is a part of us that has become distorted. There is no need to reject this part of us.

As we do this work, the walls that separate us from ourselves—and from the divine within us—begin to dissolve.
