Why can’t we sustain the deepening connection that we long for?

As attraction carries us toward partnership, the work of building a mutual venture begins. We long for this, and we also fear it. We reach for it, and we push it away.

To navigate this stage, we must pay close attention to our emotional reactions and unconscious beliefs. Our hidden negativity and destructiveness have an outsized effect on the health of our new mutual attraction.

It is true that the other person brings their own unconscious issues to the venture. But it is also simultaneously true that the problem is never the other person.

The relationship itself will show us what we need to see in ourselves. We must learn to interpret the meaning and messages underneath the frustrations that show up in our relationships.

When we are successful with this, relationships reveal aspects of ourselves that were previously hidden from awareness. When both partners approach it this way, relationship can become a truly rich mutuality.
