The journey to finding true faith begins by meeting ourselves where and as we are.
We all have our stories about ourselves. Usually they’re some idealized version of who we think we should be—need to be—to be safe and loved. To be competent. To survive.
When we set these stories aside and simply begin to notice what is happening inside us, we take our first steps on the path. Life gives us endless opportunities to get to know ourselves.
How do we move through life? Where are we tense or ill-at-ease, either pushing or pulling against life? Where do we hold back in fear? Do we trust ourselves? We’re never just one fixed thing; we fluctuate moment by moment through the day.
The journey starts by becoming curious about our reactions, desires, beliefs and feelings as they arise. And just noticing them.
This willingness to meet ourselves is about becoming more truthful. We set aside self-judgment and self-improvement to simply see what is. When we see ourselves more truthfully, we will also see how so much of what happens in our interactions with life and others is colored by the hidden beliefs we unconsciously carry around inside.
Every interaction becomes a useful mirror, because our emotional reactions have a story to tell us about something inside, waiting to be understood.
Our spiritual journey becomes intimately personal when we become willing to truthfully face what is actually here, inside us.
