Duality

What it is

Duality is the limited way of seeing life through opposites: good or bad, right or wrong, success or failure, me or you. It is the illusion that reality must always be either/or.

Why it matters

Duality is part of earthly consciousness. As we grow spiritually, our perception changes. We begin to discover that many apparent opposites belong together, within a larger reality. What first appears to be either/or gradually becomes both/and.

~1~

The basic human predicament is that we live in a land of duality. This means our world is filled with dualistic splits. But we don’t realize that these are a mirage, nothing more than a delusion of perception. (Chapter 2)

~2~

Duality is essentially our great struggle between life and death. It is the illusion that there is always a question of either/or.

It’s either you or me; it can’t be both.

The more trapped we are in duality, the more we will see life in extremes: We’re either happy or unhappy. Happiness is a code word for life, and unhappiness is a code word for death.

In duality, everything can always be split into these two categories. As long as we’re hooked into duality, we can’t possibly accept that life contains both. (Chapter 6)

~3~

Here in duality, our state of illusion is the norm. This state, in turn, creates the right environment for us to learn and grow and overcome our illusions. (Chapter 11)

~4~

Realizing that the world is not arbitrary will free up so much energy that, until now, has been uselessly running on fear…

Perhaps we’re wondering, “Why haven’t I heard of this before?… There’s a very good reason for this. Humanity has needed to reach a certain level of development first.

In particular, we had to learn to understand and work with duality. (Chapter 19)

~5~

Once we get past our negative involvements, we’ll get to move on to another sphere that doesn’t feature duality. (Chapter 11)
