Lower Self
What it is
The Lower Self is the layer of our being made up of distortions, faults and untruths. It is not who we truly are, but it creates our current, temporary reality by covering our divine nature. It must be acknowledged, accepted and transformed—not avoided or hidden.
Why it matters
Trying to destroy or deny the Lower Self only strengthens it. Transformation begins when we observe it honestly, without identifying with it.

Ever since the Fall of the Angels, our Higher Self has gradually wrapped itself in various invisible layers of more dense matter. Their frequency is somewhere in between the density of the physical body and the Higher Self.
This is the Lower Self. (Chapter 3)
~2~
The Lower Self… is made up of our faults and weaknesses. It’s also characterized by laziness and ignorance. The last thing it wants to do is change and rise above itself. (Chapter 3)
~3~
We have become alienated from ourselves and have lost our connection to the truth of who we are.
Being true to ourselves, though, doesn’t mean we give in to our Lower Self. Rather, we need to become aware of it. (Chapter 3)
~4~
As long as we don’t recognize how our Lower Self operates, it will continue to rule us. It will hide behind excuses and camouflage its devious ways.
In the end, if we don’t become aware of our Lower Self, we will never master it. This is true, regardless of how sincere we may be in our desire to live a godly life.
To be sure, expressing our love for God in our beautiful prayers and profound meditations is a wonderful thing. But we must also do the work.
And what is “the work?” Just this: to master the Lower Self. (Chapter 12)
~5~
Our refusal to let go of our Lower Self is rooted in our misplaced will to live. We’re caught up in the illusion that there is nothing more beyond our most negative aspects. For when our destructiveness rears up, we feel energized—and real.
We fear giving up this evil and settling for numbness and deadness. But in reality, if we would stop denying this distorted energy, we could reconvert it to its original vibrant condition. (Chapter 17)
~6~
We can ask to know the truth. And we can ask Christ to help us be open to receiving it. Whenever we’re in doubt, this is what we need to do.
It’s all we need to do.
This is the way to overcome the resistance of the Lower Self. (Chapter 12)
~7~
The Lower Self is selfish and proud, so it moves through life shrouded in personal vanity. This part also includes the ego, with all its self-centered maneuvers. (Chapter 3)
~8~
When a thought or intention emanates from the Higher Self, it often gets polluted by tendencies from the Lower Self. This colors things, making the original movement distorted or twisted.
Such tainting of Higher Self messages with Lower Self motives creates a disorder in the soul that makes one emotionally sick. (Chapter 3)
