When we have no awareness of self, there is harmony. When we begin to have limited awareness that there are pieces of ourselves we don’t know, we sense the disharmony. And when we reach full awareness, we will be in harmony again.

The friction and disharmony we experience give us exactly what we need to heal and grow.
The friction and disharmony we experience give us exactly what we need to heal and grow.

When we incarnated into this lifetime, it was with the intention to heal some aspect of ourselves—some disharmony—so we can find our way back home to God. So life, which always operates according to God’s divine laws, gives us the lessons we need for that to happen. The friction and disharmony we experience on Earth—bumping up against other souls who have their own imperfections—give us exactly what we need to heal and grow.

If anything, the Pathwork Guide suggests we think about what our next lifetime or two will be about. What is the work we have yet to do?
If anything, the Pathwork Guide suggests we think about what our next lifetime or two will be about. What is the work we have yet to do?

The journey of the soul can only be understood by realizing that we incarnate many, many times before we are fully healed and reunited with God. It is not possible for anyone to do it another way.

God’s laws are infinite and just. There is good reason for everything that happens. The anesthesia we experience when we incarnate is an example of this. The fact that we cannot recall previous lifetimes is with good reason. And we should not spend effort trying to unearth them.

If knowledge of a previous lifetime would be helpful for us, it will come to us through our intuitive channel. Then if this happens, it will feel like the sacred gift that it is. And we won’t want to share it with just anyone. If anything, the Guide suggests we think about what our next lifetime or two will be about. What is the work we have yet to do?

It is possible that if we complete our task for this lifetime, reincarnation can happen within the same lifespan. The Guide was clear that this is something a person needs to sense for themselves. No outer entity will be able to validate this for us if we feel this may be part of our journey.

What may be more important to recognize is any belief we harbor that doing this work and completing our task will cause us to die. Death is always something a soul agrees to on another level. The reasons for a shortened lifetime are many and cannot be generalized. More can be read under the topics Death and Reincarnation at www.theguidespeaks.com.

In all cases, our own main inner split will be transferred onto our parents. This split will hold opposites, with each parent activating one aspect of the split. For example, the split might be: “it is painful to be seen and it is painful not to be seen”. Then one parent will act aggressively toward the child, making it painful to be seen. And the other will not be able to see the child, which will be painful. Both parents are of course acting from their own blindness. The attempt to do two opposite things at once—be seen and not be seen—creates tremendous tension and turmoil in the soul.

The experiences in our childhood are actually an effect of causes we set in motion. Suddenly the world doesn’t seem so random.
The experiences in our childhood are actually an effect of causes we set in motion. Suddenly the world doesn’t seem so random.

All reaction to authority is a projection of one’s soul split onto another person. When triggered into a trance, we are in transference and not seeing the other clearly for who they are. Transference is also an important aspect of the healing journey. A trained Helper or healer will be aware of it and will hold it with the care and attention needed for doing this sensitive work.

Since everyone arrives on this planet by way of the Fall, it becomes clear why everyone experiences pain and frustration during childhood. In our immaturity, we tend to blame our parents for our pain.

But if we back up a step, we see that we are on a far bigger journey. We are coming from a place of darkness—that was caused by our own choices. The experiences in our childhood are actually an effect of causes we set in motion. So what initially appears as a cause—that our parents created our pain and suffering—can be seen from a greater perspective of truth to be an effect. Suddenly the world doesn’t seem so random.

Our job as parents is not to save our children from the work they have come here to do.
Our job as parents is not to save our children from the work they have come here to do.

If we are parents, this work may reveal to us the ways in which we have fallen short. No good will come from using this as a weapon towards the self. We can express the pain of realizing that in our blindness we have hurt another. But our job as parents is not to save our children from the work they have come here to do. They too have a Higher Self, spirit guides and a task.

Parents have the most influence in a child’s life. But others, including teachers, siblings or anyone closely related, also can make impressions in the child’s malleable soul substance. By doing this work, we can model a more authentic way of living and create a container in which the child can learn. When we overreact, we can own our mistakes. We can learn to tune in to what is really needed in each situation, instead of relying on rules.

We can give the gift of being present, creating a space for our children to grow and make mistakes. In this way, we can help them surface faulty beliefs before they get buried deeper. And we make it safe for them to feel all their feelings. Creating security for our children can move mountains.

We know that if we go to the gym and stand next to a weight machine, our body will not become stronger. To build physical strength, we need to have something to push against. So it is with our soul. In the Spirit World, like attracts like, and we hang out with other spirits who are at a similar level of development. While more comfortable perhaps, this doesn’t motivate us to heal or grow.

The bigger a person’s light, the bigger the shadow it can cast if even the tiniest distortion gets swept under a rug.
The bigger a person’s light, the bigger the shadow it can cast if even the tiniest distortion gets swept under a rug.

In the Spirit World, the word for our planet, “Earth,” basically translates to “land of lack of awareness.” Earth is a sphere inhabited by a great range of souls who are all blind in some way and who differ in their level of development. By bumping up against others who have their own blindness, our issues come to the surface. This is how we grow. We can become bitter, or we can become better.

It is not an accident that we cannot know another’s level of spiritual development just by looking at them, and there is nothing gained from judging where another is on their journey. The only thing that matters is our willingness to look within ourselves. But we can be sure that if we are reading these words, more is expected of us than being a decent person.

When starting down a spiritual path to self-knowing, it may be tempting to want to bring everyone along. Trust that each person has his or her own inner plan, and lead by example. Then if others notice our light and want what we have, they will ask. It’s all about attraction, not promotion.

The more we evolve along our path, the more important it becomes that we continue to do our own work, clearing away every little speck of blindness that appears. Because the bigger a person’s light, the bigger the shadow it can cast if even the tiniest distortion gets swept under a rug.

We evolve slowly from one incarnation to the next. As we do, we rediscover the Higher-Self quality of humility hidden beneath our Lower-Self pride and feelings of inferiority. Self-confidence will naturally develop. We will have gratitude not only for the support we receive—for it is only with the support of God and our guides in the Spirit World that we can heal and grow—but also for the challenges that act as fertilizer for good growth and healing. Then being “more evolved” or “more enlightened” will not become an ego trip. It would be like asking: which is better, an adult or a child?

Creation is shaped in such a marvelous way that whatever distortions exist, in the process of working them out and transforming them back into their original way, even the distortion itself can become useful to the entire process of evolution.

So, for example, the drug problem of the 1960s and 1970s was an expression of souls with certain misplaced needs that were being fulfilled in a destructive way. The Spirit World made very positive use of the distortion. The taking of drugs opened spiritual doors for a great number of souls who would otherwise have remained totally dead to all inner levels of reality.

This does not mean that taking drugs is recommended, for there is surely a much better way to open these doors. However, as long as the conditions existed in these souls as they were, a large influx of spiritual reality—no matter how it was gained—came into a very materialistic world full of very separated consciousness.
