Spiritual Laws

What they are

While it’s true to say that God created spiritual laws, it may be more accurate to say that God is expressed through them. They are not commandments imposed from outside us, but expressions of life itself—of reality itself. Because we have free will, we can choose to align with these laws—which is God’s will for us—or resist them.

Why they matter

Spiritual laws continually guide us back toward truth because separation from truth creates pain. Pain, then, is an effect—a signal. The cause is living out of alignment with spiritual laws.

The way spiritual laws work, the more we deviate from them, the more we live in misery. At some point, this misery causes us to turn around and realize that we ourselves are the source of our misery. Not God and God’s laws.

We can see the love that is built right into the laws.

Just look at the way deviation from spiritual laws is the very medicine we need to cure us of our pain. (Chapter 14)

Our inner child wants one thing—Utopia—but this doesn’t exist. Utopia is an illusion. And the price we must pay for maintaining this illusion is extremely high.

The more we try to evade paying a fair price for freedom—in this case, the price is self-responsibility—the higher the toll. This operates according to unavoidable spiritual laws. (Chapter 19)

There’s no miracle formula here that will come as a reward from heaven. But what we can see, plainly and logically, is that this path is based on the simple law of cause and effect.

This law is quite natural and impersonal. If we apply these teachings to our lives, they will work for us.

There is nothing we must believe. (Chapter 12)

First off, working with others aligns us with the law of brotherhood and sisterhood. This spiritual law states that opening our heart to another person ushers in spiritual help we could not receive by ourselves.

But when we seal ourselves off from others, we get locked in a vacuum that prevents us from completely evaluating ourselves. This is the case, regardless of how hard we may work or how intelligently we may read or study, and notwithstanding how much self-honesty we attempt to call forth.

When we open ourselves up to another soul, the deeper understanding we desire can flow in. Further, it takes a certain amount of humility to move past our isolation. And in the beginning, such humility may not come easily. (Chapter 12)

When we violate divine law by going down a road of hate and spite, we can’t even believe in the possibilities of love and light. Then we’ll unconsciously want to cheat life, hoping to get more than we’re willing to give. This is in violation of yet another spiritual law.

Now, no matter how much we might try to believe in life’s abundance, it won’t work. Our soul substance will refuse the impression. Because we’re standing in violation of this other law. Simply put, we can’t cheat life. There’s a finely calibrated mechanism that balances all this out. (Chapter 18)

~6~

If we convince ourselves that it’s dangerous to feel, we may be headed for a crisis and a breakdown that is a result of this deep-seated conviction. Like it says in Scripture, “According to your faith be it unto you.”

There’s no magic here, just spiritual laws at work. (Chapter 2)

~7~

We must bring ourselves back into alignment with spiritual laws. Then we can embrace life fearlessly, without self-pity or being afraid of being hurt. (Chapter 12)
